My name is Debbie (Terrier Mama), and I am the proud owner of two beautiful Rat Terriers named Mindy and Lexi.
In 2005, we brought our Mindy home; it was a lot of work, but she turned out to be a special friend to both my husband and me. She’s charming, sweet, funny and smart. And that is a Rat Terrier to a tee.
And just this year (2009), we brought our little Lexi into our family. It’s been different trying to train the “new” puppy while the “old” puppy is also demanding attention and treats.
We adore both our girls and I highly recommend the Rat Terrier breed, but only to the right owners. Rat Terriers are “Terriers” through and through. They are delightful, but very bossy & demanding; if not trained properly, they will walk all over you and rule the house.
They do not need a strong hand or voice when training, they respond much better to positive and consistent training. Ratties are highly intelligent and love to learn new tricks.
They are a very vocal breed; Rat Terriers will let you know when they want something or aren’t getting enough attention, either with a grumble or nose nudge. They also will loudly sound the alarm when someone intrudes on their home territory.
Watch out, they can run like the wind and even when trained, they can take off after a squirrel or friendly neighbor at a moment’s notice.
Even though they do need a fair amount of exercise, Ratties are very content to snuggle next to you on the couch all day long.
The joy and laughter a Ratty brings to its owners is incredible. I don’t know what I would do without my Mindy, and now that we have little Lexi, it’s going to be even better!
